When he writes..

Ambik dari blog hubby..

*************************

Well, maybe not exactly the first 3 month... as i already have an approved shutterstock account since 2008, but never really try to upload something sale-able until now... since 2008 i had about 25 picture but only a bunch of it generate sale... most probabily because the subject lack commercial value (that time i upload bird photos, insect macro photos, etc) .. at that time i didn't try microstock seriously because in my perception.. only those talented with lots of good creative idea will excel in stock photography .. and i'm far from those description.. (it is true, but you can slowly nurture the stock perspective into your head, and effort count more than talent in microstock) .. as you can see my portfolio size graph below where it had only 25 pictures in September (which is the numbers for 2 years!) before it start to increase steadily since late october 2011

Its all started in late September with an arabic calligraphy vector (i'm taking arabic calligraphy class since February 2011.. until now) which i draw to learn vector tracing and since its a vector i try to upload to Shutterstock and it surprise me when it is sold a few times ... the curiousity encourage me upload few more vectors... with most of them sold immediately after approval... and since then i started to upload regularly and by end of 2011 my gallery portfolio grew to 269 pictures from 25 pictures before September..

and here is my montly performance chart after 3 month

As you can see from the chart.... total of download follow closely the total number of pictures available for sale in my portfolio .. which totally make perfect sense...i read somewhere in microstock forum that a good quality portfolio should have at least USD1.00/picture monthly average.. the average one should be around USD0.50/picture per month average... mine is lagged behind at a mere USD0.40/picture and that figure if minus the single extended license download (USD28) i got in Dec would push my average to only USD0.30/picture per month ... so there is a lot of work need to be done to push the quality and also the quantity at the same time to get some decent income from microstock

Type of download also affect the income considerably... the major income for my portfolio is the USD 0.25/download at 63% followed by the On Demand download (USD 1.88 or USD0.81/download ) at 23%. Of course you will feel better reward with the higher pay per picture like On Demand download or even the Extended License at USD28/picture but the major contributor with more consistent pattern would still be the normal USD0.25/download

My first ever Extended License/Enhanced License download at USD28/download.. is the following buah tunjuk langit (alternative herbal medicine for diabetes patient). Extended License/Enhanced License is required when the advertiser/user intent to use the picture in their product or maybe in advertising campaign exceeding 250,000 copies etc..

3 month in microstock is like newborn baby... too many things to learn.. the lingo.. buyer preference.. reviewer hurdle... quality control... type & style of images that sell.. etc... luckily i had so many friends and mentors with similar passion in this field .. breaking your ego would be the first step as rejection is the middle name in this industry.. the faster you overcame the rejection phase.. the better stock photographer you would be...

Among my best seller at the moment

if you haven't started... its better late than never.. Shutterstock is a good place to start as it is among the major earner for most microstocker... the others would be istockphoto, fotolia,123rf and dreamstime. If you like, you can have a peek at my humble portfolio but i wouldn't say its a good portfolio for reference... but i hope it will be soon... :D

About Shutterstock .... again...

Just for a record, my husband has just received his first Extended Download from Shutterstock... ok ok, let me explain what is Extended Download is all about..

In one simple easy word.. Extended download is the highest pay per download per picture which is USD28.. :) the common pay usually USD0.25 per picture or on demand USD1.88..

Above is the luckiest picture of the day .. :) simple je gambar nyer kan, bet orang tu nak buat advertising kot.. pieces of mahogany fruit which is an alternative herb medicine for diabetes..  Hubby said, this picture was taken coincidentally, this medicine belong to his colleague, ok ni ala-ala conversation la, nak buat ayat tak sedap pulak bunyi dia

Mr. Hubby: Ape ni?
Kawan : Ubat untuk kencing manis
Mr. Hubby: menarik ni untuk ambik gambar (*snap *snap)

Then what happened.. terus USD28xRM3 goes to his account.. Menarik?? :)

Wanna try your luck??  Ape salah nyer, no harm pun and it can be any picture on earth :)

Make money with your photos!!

First of all, today, for a record, I am on MC, first time dekat tempat baru... akak demam dik.... tapi gagah lagi nak taip dekat sini.. blog pun tempat carik makan jugak kan.. sape nak bagi senang-senang duit Nuffnang kan..

ok back to the topic, I found it is interesting to share what Shutterstock is all about. Actually, we have few in the websites which have similar function like Shutterstock, but since my husband is now actively contributing for Shutterstock and I pun ade lah sikit-sikit paham pasal Shutterstock ni, why don't I share kan..

If we are referring to Wikipedia, Shutterstock is a microstock photography website which maintains a library of royalty-free stock images available by subscription. Visitors can browse the entire image library for free, and can license and download images online through a variety of subscription offers.

Ok, kalau dalam bahasa Melayu nyer, Shutterstock ni macam tempat kite perpustakaan y ang simpan gambar-gambar, ade orang yang letak gambar, dan ade orang yang beli gambar, orang letak gambar we called them as contributors while those who bought the pictures, we called them as buyers..

So how does it works.. as a contributor, you just submit your pictures, and the pictures can be anything on earth!! and thereafter, after your pictures have been approved by the administrator, your pictures are ready for sale :) Easy?? Yes and no..

ni tengah tunggu approval

Not so easy part is, those who are in Shutterstock I believe they are professional photographers or knowledgeable in photography, so in the case where you photos are ok-ok jer, potentially chances your photos will be rejected are higher. Ok, errr, not that to be proud of my husband, but somehow, his photos are quite amazing with the photography techniques and what not, still, sometimes his photos were rejected by them. Enough say, it may looks not as easy as it seems to get your photos approve by Shutterstock.

ni gambar kene reject

BUT... once your photos are approved!! then all you have to do is looking closely at your Downloads Statistics.. :)

Ok, there are few packages offered via Shutterstock and buyers can choose any of it. But as for the contributors, when a buyer download your photo, you will get a commission ranging from $0.25 to $28 per photo. And if you are lucky, or you maintain your own portfolio, insyaAllah perhaps any agency around the world would be your loyal customers :)..

ni gambar yang orang dah beli..

To me, it doesn't matter if it is $0.25 per picture because your buyers are around the world and Shutterstock itself is already popular for stock photos... and if any of the photos have been bought, another person can still buy the same photo.. so your photo tu tak kisah lah berape orang pun nak beli..  and in my husband's case, with $0.25 per photos, you can easily make few bucks bukan ringgit, but dollars per month. One of my hubby's friends dah buat duit sampai $27,000 ok... The minimum cash out payment is only $75 per month.

But of cos to achieve that, your have to work harder. Meaning to say, if your active photos currently are 200 photos, the percentage of people downloading your photos are around 10% - so dalam 20 orang kan.. 20 orang lebih kurang USD5 (considering USD0.25 per picture).. , so, macam my husband sekarang ni pun, dia tengah built up his own portfolios.. he just started at the end of october kot.. so baru lagi..

The drawback, hmm, by right, the price commensurate where the photos can be used.. kalau macam 25 sen of cos lah certain tempat je, u tak boleh letak kat billboard or newspapers or whatever.. buttttttt unfortunately, in certain countries (like Malaysia) this ethical issue is being ignored. so terpakselah u telan je bile tengok gambar you tu merata-rata..

So, anyone interested?? Click here
